The Spirit of Winter - Grand Canyon

A gray day at the Grand Canyon inspired me to explore the foreground promontories rather than the distant depths. Then, as though suddenly seeing both together, I got a sense of vastness and vertigo.

I like to paint from imagination - it gives me freedom and challenge. In this piece I wanted to keep a balanced composition and bring a breath of fresh air to still life using the rhytm of rose color.

Another one of my daily warm up paint sketches, this painting is the result of my goals and intentions to focus on a "quiet space" with a wacky point of view. My warm ups are out of my head -- I paint with a minimum color palette and finish when I begin to smile.

Canyon Resident

A chance encounter with a pack team coming out of the canyon allowed me to get some wonderful pictures for a painting. A play with color (photos never show the true colors or the true brillance of sunlight) helped me to capture the feeling of a sunny hot spring day at the Grand Canyon.

Floral Arches

I was just entering Sedona's popular Tlaquepaque,when this pot of flowering plants caught my eye. I liked how I could look beyond the flowers into two additional courtyards. The sun was just hitting the pink flowers creating an interesting contrast to the shadowed covered entry.

After Vermeer

I have recently been powerfully drawn to the work of two artists: Turner, and Vermeer. This painting is after Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. I liked the glowing light, and the luminous color in this piece of work, and the way Vermeer painted the softness of the skin. Like a vision emanating from the darkness, she seems to belong to no specific time or place.
Vermeer painted the original between 1665-1666.

Grand Canyon, Afternoon

A recent trip to the Grand Canyon brought about a number of studies. This one struck me for its architectural look. Almost like ancient ruins on a grand scale. There is an interesting sense of flight, of being literally uplifted in looking out over so much terrain. This painting is a mix of palette knife and brush work.

Sedona Rocks I

I paint as a means of avoiding real work. To daub some paint on a piece of paper, give it a good story and title, hob nob with important collectors over fine wine and gourmet food and get paid for it is hardly work…or even reality! This is a view from our deck in Sedona.

One Rose

I prefer to paint small still lifes alla prima. It 's like an indoor plein air painting in that you get one shot to get it right. More exciting than a painting with unlimited time and the piece retains that freshness that I love.

Poppy Point

This painting of Mexican Poppies was done near the Silverbell Mountians in Southern Arizona. I liked the way the mass of bright yellow poppies contrasted with the cooler, subdued colors of the distant mountains. It seemed to create pleasing center of interest.

A Sliver of Light

This is a plein air painting done along the Verde River. The light was fading fast which forced me to paint quickly and to just go for the essentials. I like the brushwork, especially in the bushes and in the water.

The Reading Chair

A solitary golden chair in a used bookstore attracted my attention. Initial sketches included a child reading, but in the end, the empty chair was more evocative. A very limited palette allowed me to express the atmosphere I was trying to capture. The use of opaque paint contrasted with relatively thin glazes enhanced the feeling of depth.
