I was recently in Westford, MA teaching a couple of workshops. 2 generous souls allowed me to stay in their lovely barn apt, which is where I did this interior scene. I was fascinated by the slight difference in value between what was inside and outside the window. I also loved the way the light reflected off the red table in the foregound and the book and cup of water sitting on it. I gave it to the owners of the barn as a thank you.

Arrival: the sun in the late afternoon creates a welcoming glow. An unusually large array of cushions have congregated on the end sofa. In the background I can hear a BBC program about choirs, it sounds like a competition, one choir just
sang 'Moon River', so I'm off to investigate.

The Reading Chair

A solitary golden chair in a used bookstore attracted my attention. Initial sketches included a child reading, but in the end, the empty chair was more evocative. A very limited palette allowed me to express the atmosphere I was trying to capture. The use of opaque paint contrasted with relatively thin glazes enhanced the feeling of depth.
