Stage three has oil on most of the canvas now but I can still see the underpainting influencing the color,(see my two previous posts). Hopefully there will be just one more stage...but I am thinking of changing some things...

Vince Fazio - Acrylic Underpainting

This was a demonstration done in the gallery space at the Sedona Arts Center. Starting with a white canvas I did a few charcoal marks to start the drawing then jumped into a loose acrylic underpainting to start the painting process. I got as far as placing some palette knife work (still in acrylic) on the 'Tower' formations right hand side. I anticipate finishing with oils after more development in acrylic. Will follow up next week...

This represents a "first stopping point" for this painting. Next week I will publish the next stage. There is no telling what goes on between a beginning and an end. Usually though it is something difficult. The difficult middle. Though at this stage it is the intent to "keep it all fresh", to not make it difficult. To not make the 'will to finish' something that goes too far. Bonnard said a painting is best when it is two-thirds done. What is your opinion?

I'm showing a step-by-step just to demonstrate the continuity of the "abstract content" in the finished work and the beginning point - though the specifics of edge, value, color and texture change a lot - the abstract basis of the composition (or you might say the shapes of the composition) do not change much. "Magic Land" refers to the subject but also to the magical quality of painting - that planes of color and value create a virtual world.

The process used in this painting - that of creating a quick acrylic underpainting - and then using oil paint as the finishing process will also be explored in my upcoming workshop here at the arts center "Painting Without Fear" in March 16 -20.

I have done a couple paintings at this spot in the past. A recent trip to the Grand Canyon shortly after the snow led to this drawing. Maybe another painting to come. I like the square format on this. When working on paper I allow the composition to grow or shrink as needed. This strange formation actually exists pretty much as portrayed though a layer of snow is making the path out to this promontory seem more walkable than it really would be.

This was a quick plein air painting at one of those spots you see as you are driving around and then have to find the closest place you can paint from that is not in the middle of the road. Sedona is one of those places that really wants to be portrayed a bit panoramic.

Vince Fazio "Persephone Rising"

"Persephone Rising" 36 x 24 oil on canvas $750

This vertical diptych developed as a way of joining two unlikely scenarios, but then finding a gestalt experience through the integration. It was then included in an exhibition on Greek Myths as "Persephone Rising". I was thinking of it as "A Fathers Anxiety as a Daughter turns 16" (she, the daughter was originally depicted on a tight rope). It was the shows curator that identified the Persephone theme. Persephone rises in the spring from Hades where she is held captive all winter. This initiates the cycle of the seasons. She has to return to Hades each year as part of complex bargain struck between quarreling gods.

A twenty-minute life drawing session. This is done at an open studio drawing opportunity we have on Sundays at the arts center. It is such a popular session that we had to create a waitlist on which I am an alternate...so every once in a while I get a call inviting me to come in...Charcoal is one of my favorite mediums, it is so flexible. In my workshop "Drawing Witout Fear" we spend at least an entire day working on gray paper with charcoal and white pastel for a few highlights. Italia!

This is the first painting I did at the Villa where we hosted the workshop with Randall Sexton and Marcia Burtt. We had a great group of painters who worked rain and shine. Though the first day was kind of gray and overcast it can bring out the local colors in a strong way. This painting was done by starting with oversaturated color and adding white into it as needed with a larger rather than smaller brush. More from italy in the next few posts!

Backyard Landscape

A drawing can find its own natural borders or edges. In this case a kind of vignette is formed by the edges of the drawing, a frame within.

This is a example of continuing the drawing process into a painting process. I enjoy the way that a work on paper like this remains a drawing. I feel drawings work best as unfinished pieces retaining an openess that is hard to leave in a 'painting'.

Audience

There are a few places in the world where people gather to watch the sunset. At edge of the Grand Canyon the mix is particularly international. At any given sunset you could expect representation from all the continents and many different cultures and languages - for a moment unified in a singular experience.

Evening Clouds

A mix of palette knife and brushwork, this painting was about how a dramatic silhouette in the landscape creates two different realms of color and light out of the sky and land...and yet they are one.

Last Snow

This painting was painted on a ground color of cadmium orange, the color has a way of glowing through the whole painting. I enjoy experimenting with different ground colors or underpaintings usually a very strong warm or cool.

Sarah in the Landscape

A mix of palette knife and brushwork, this painting was inspired by a recent trip to some reflecting pools that form periodically on a rock outcropping near Cathedral Rock. I had planned to have my daughter play Narcissus at the edge of the water but there was too much wind to see reflections! So rather than a mythical theme we found a simpler 'moment in the landscape'.
