I am enjoying the more horizontal format than I usually paint in. This is a larger version of a previous post. I am also enjoying a larger format - more freedom - more space. But nice to have done all the exploring in smaller works. This composition started as a 6x8 inch oil, then later a 16 x 20 acrylic was done, later this was repainted with oil on top of the acrylic painting. That composition was cropped to a more horizontal format and made large, now in the 24x36.

Michael Chesley Johnson - Color Triads

"Schnebly Hill Chasm"

I remember reading somewhere that the triad of secondaries makes for the most pleasing color harmony because the natural landscape consists of orange, green and purple. This wasn't on my mind when I painted the picture above, but in retrospect, I unwittingly used this triad. Most likely, it's because I painted what I saw.

My secondaries run from the pure hues to neutrals and in a variety of temperatures. It'd be a good quiz for students to see how many they kind find. (Any takers?)

This was painted during late morning at Schnebly Hill, when Munds Mountain is backlit. The chasm in the foreground is part of a wash that runs into Bear Wallow Canyon. The rock ledges are steep and dramatic - worth exploring, for sure.

By the way, there are still openings in my pastel workshop for the end of March.  We'll have glorious weather and long days for painting!  I hope to see some of you there.

Iris II

This is a watercolor; I poured paint and then erased it, which gives this very soft and mystical effect, which I love..

Michael Chesley Johnson - Golden Majesty

I'm in Sedona now for the annual Sedona Plein Air Festival. It's been a great but busy week, painting in preparation for the final Gala, which is tonight.

Yesterday, I headed off soon after dawn for Red Rock Crossing. I had one painting left to do, and I decided I wanted something with water and a tree. I'd painted my share of red rocks this week, and it was time to move on to a different subject. I found a quiet spot, and my only companions were a pair of fly fishermen who arrived at about the same time I did. I was tempted to include them, but I knew they'd make my 9x12 too busy. (Sorry, guys!)

Backyard Landscape

This is a plein air landscape using the backyard in the late afternoon with strong diagonal shadows to break up the composition. I need to get more plein air painting practice in as I am heading to Italy next week to do a workshop with Randall Sexton for the Arts Center. Next Post will be Italia.

Boynton Canyon Mural

I live in Sedona, an amazingly beautiful part of the world. One day while driving down Dry Creek Road the light was particularly mind blowing and I shot a series of photos.
In this mural I wanted to catch the light and the incredible immensity of these red rocks. The mural was done as part of my grant project, (a series of murals in acrylic in a 'watercolor style').

Sands – Messing Around in the Studio

This painting started as a disaster of a drawing that I had to do for an illustration project. Seeing as I had nothing to lose I started playing with it – painted with watercolor, drew some more, added sawdust and layered paper onto it with polymer gel...  just experimenting.
This is what happened.

A mix of palette knife and brushwork, this painting was inspired by a recent trip to some reflecting pools that form periodically on a rock outcropping near Cathedral Rock. I had planned to have my daughter play Narcissus at the edge of the water but there was too much wind to see reflections! So rather than a mythical theme we found a simpler 'moment in the landscape'.

I paint as a means of avoiding real work. To daub some paint on a piece of paper, give it a good story and title, hob nob with important collectors over fine wine and gourmet food and get paid for it is hardly work…or even reality! This is a view from our deck in Sedona.
