The title of this one evokes the feeling of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and the series that I have been exploring in my paintings of this amazing place. This particular spot will be familiar to any of those that have hiked down the Kaibab Trail.

After a Dusty Rain

Oil on canvas 18x24
This is from a spot on the South Rim where I found myself in the rain after a day of painting. I ended up waiting and waiting to see if the sun was going to make that one last appearance where it shoots a beam of light up the canyon from under the clouds. Just long enough in this case to get a couple photos to interprete.

Vince Fazio - Oils Over Acrylic
"Tower" 24x30 oil on canvas NFS
Stage three has oil on most of the canvas now but I can still see the underpainting influencing the color,(see my two previous posts). Hopefully there will be just one more stage...but I am thinking of changing some things...

Vince Fazio - Acrylic Underpainting
"Tower" 24x30 acrylic on canvas NFS
This was a demonstration done in the gallery space at the Sedona Arts Center. Starting with a white canvas I did a few charcoal marks to start the drawing then jumped into a loose acrylic underpainting to start the painting process. I got as far as placing some palette knife work (still in acrylic) on the 'Tower' formations right hand side. I anticipate finishing with oils after more development in acrylic. Will follow up next week...

Vince Fazio - Sunset Ceremony (stage 1)

"Sunset Ceremony" 24x36 oil on canvas NFS
This represents a "first stopping point" for this painting. Next week I will publish the next stage. There is no telling what goes on between a beginning and an end. Usually though it is something difficult. The difficult middle. Though at this stage it is the intent to "keep it all fresh", to not make it difficult. To not make the 'will to finish' something that goes too far. Bonnard said a painting is best when it is two-thirds done. What is your opinion?

Vince Fazio - Magic Land
Final 12x16 oil on canvas $300
Middle
"Magic Land" 12x16 oil on canvas $300
I'm showing a step-by-step just to demonstrate the continuity of the "abstract content" in the finished work and the beginning point - though the specifics of edge, value, color and texture change a lot - the abstract basis of the composition (or you might say the shapes of the composition) do not change much. "Magic Land" refers to the subject but also to the magical quality of painting - that planes of color and value create a virtual world.
The process used in this painting - that of creating a quick acrylic underpainting - and then using oil paint as the finishing process will also be explored in my upcoming workshop here at the arts center "Painting Without Fear" in March 16 -20.

Vince Fazio - Toward the Sky

12x12 oil on canvas $200
Working warmer (and grayer) than I usually do, but it feels more expansive. I am offering a "Painting Without Fear" 5 day workshop March 16 - 20 at the Sedona Arts Center. This class requires some drawing experience but all levels of painters are welcome. All materials are included.
Please Email me for purchase information.

Vince Fazio - "Tower"

16.5 x 16.5 graphite on paper $150
I have done a couple paintings at this spot in the past. A recent trip to the Grand Canyon shortly after the snow led to this drawing. Maybe another painting to come. I like the square format on this. When working on paper I allow the composition to grow or shrink as needed. This strange formation actually exists pretty much as portrayed though a layer of snow is making the path out to this promontory seem more walkable than it really would be.

Summer Haze, Moran Point

Vince Fazio - Oil on canvas 24x30 $650
This was from some earlier studies and photographs this summer. I really enjoyed the larger format for the landscape and I enjoy the intense shifts in palette and tone created by the dramatic atmosperic perspective at the Grand Canyon.

Audience

Vince Fazio 9x12 Oil on canvas panal $135
There are a few places in the world where people gather to watch the sunset. At edge of the Grand Canyon the mix is particularly international. At any given sunset you could expect representation from all the continents and many different cultures and languages - for a moment unified in a singular experience.

The Spirit of Winter - Grand Canyon

Vince Fazio, 16x20, Oil on canvas (SOLD)
A gray day at the Grand Canyon inspired me to explore the foreground promontories rather than the distant depths. Then, as though suddenly seeing both together, I got a sense of vastness and vertigo.

Canyon Resident

Betsey Nelson oil on canvas panel 5x7 $220
A chance encounter with a pack team coming out of the canyon allowed me to get some wonderful pictures for a painting. A play with color (photos never show the true colors or the true brillance of sunlight) helped me to capture the feeling of a sunny hot spring day at the Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon, Afternoon

Vince Fazio 9x12 Oil on canvas panal $140
A recent trip to the Grand Canyon brought about a number of studies. This one struck me for its architectural look. Almost like ancient ruins on a grand scale. There is an interesting sense of flight, of being literally uplifted in looking out over so much terrain. This painting is a mix of palette knife and brush work.
