When I first set this up I thought - oh no that's way too difficult. But I really liked the light on the flower and the ground through the jar. So I did it anyway, and I'm really thrilled with how it turned out. My secret? Squint squint squint squint squint squint squint.

I found this flower and more like it growing wild in my yard at my new house in Bastrop, TX. I love finding flowers outside because they can be so much more delicate and varied than what you can find in the store. Because of that they don't last as long picked and they are harder to paint (smaller parts) but still it such a joy to find and paint.

I've been working on these sunflowers for a few days and am really enjoying it. Any kind of flowers are tough, but they all seem to have their own unique challenges. I tend to work on them in series so I can get the hang of them for a while before I move on to the next thing. They are also serving as studies for larger peices - they help me work out the colors and composition before I commit to a large canvas.

I've been working on a series of carnations, this being the 4th. A student in my last workshop asked me to paint them and I've been stuck ever since. Carnations are a tough flower to paint, but I am thoroughy enjoying the challenge!

Robert Burridge - Make Things…

Every year I am involved in the Central Coast Wine Classic, held in California. The event is very supportive of the arts and I wanted to create an image that would accomplish three things: 1) Be a painterly painting 2) Include wine imagery without be a typical still life and 3) Convey an uplifting message. I was happy with the results. I have been using stenciled lettering in some of my paintings for the last few years. I find that people respond to my narrative text. I like it because it keeps me focused. After good response, I decided to create a "Make Things" series of works. This one is 22 x 22, acrylic on paper, mounted on a canvas.

I found this little blue vase in a thriftstore recently and it spoke to me. The flower I've been growing in my garden. There is a whole bed of these and they're rather delicate little things. By the time I had finished the painting the flower was closed. The next day it was open again!
