This was done from a photo just as an experiment to see how much information could be painted on a 5x7 panel(alot). Most of the painting was done within an hour. Finishes where added over the course of several days. Most times less is more and as you spend more time with your paintings you realize the strength will be in less not more information.

Sarah in the Landscape

A mix of palette knife and brushwork, this painting was inspired by a recent trip to some reflecting pools that form periodically on a rock outcropping near Cathedral Rock. I had planned to have my daughter play Narcissus at the edge of the water but there was too much wind to see reflections! So rather than a mythical theme we found a simpler 'moment in the landscape'.

After New Snow

This is one of several small warm ups after some new snow. Painted in Flagstaff, it is always a good idea to do a quick almost instinctual painting. Making quick decisions without allowing the mind to think too much gives a more 'real' painting. We usually let what we know get in the way of good painting.

Playing in the Sand

The Spirit of Winter - Grand Canyon

A gray day at the Grand Canyon inspired me to explore the foreground promontories rather than the distant depths. Then, as though suddenly seeing both together, I got a sense of vastness and vertigo.
